Concert Dress Guidlines

The Houston Symphonic Band believes that whenever we perform in public we should always put our best foot forward and present to our audiences as professional an appearance as possible. It is not our intent to inconvenience our present undo expenses to our members, but we believe that proper formal concert attire is an essential component of a musician's equipment.

What is listed below are just guidelines, but please use good judgement if you deviate from them. If you are unsure, ask.

If obtaining any of the items below presents difficulty or a financial burden, please let us know. There are usually many people in the band who have extra formal wear and would be glad to let you borrow what you need.

Formal Black (high profile)

Men

Black Tuxedo (no tails)
White Pleated Tuxedo shirt with French cuffs and stud fastened front with either wing or point collar.
Black studs and cuff links
Black Bow Tie (no substitutes)
Black Leather Dress shoes with leather soles
Black socks

Vests and Cummerbunds are optional

Jewelry should be limited to watches and rings, preferably no more than one ring per hand. No necklaces or bracelets.

Women

Long floor or ankle length all black dress with full length sleeves, modest neckline and back. Sleeveless dresses are appropriate if worn with a jacket (black).

OR

Dress black slacks or long black straight skirt with white blouse and black jacket. Jacket should extend below the waist, be able to be closed in front and have full length sleeves. No color or or contrasting trim (ie. white piping or embroidery).

Closed toe black leather shoes with modest heals
Dark stockings

Jewelry should be subdued. Simple small chain necklaces and bracelets. Simple small earrings. No pins or broaches. Preferably no more than one ring per hand.

Formal Black (low profile)

As close to above as possible.

Men may wear a black or navy suit or similar sports jacket with dark pants. White long sleeve shirt. Long dark tie. Shoes may have black rubber or synthetic soles and may be of a more casual nature (still no athletic shoes, boots or excessively thick soled shoes).

Women may wear black slacks or an over-the-knee black or navy skirt or dress. Skirts or slacks should be worn with a black or navy blouse or a white blouse with black or navy jacket. Open toed leather shoes may be worn if worn with dark stockings.
